Minor Cannabinoids: Mechanisms and Emerging Clinical Potential
Dr. Bonni Goldstein, MD, CEO & Co-founder, Goldstein Wellness
While Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) have dominated both research and clinical discourse, the cannabis plant produces a diverse array of lesser-known “minor cannabinoids” with distinct pharmacologic profiles and emerging therapeutic potential. Compounds such as cannabigerol (CBG), cannabidivarin (CBDV), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and others are largely non-intoxicating and demonstrate meaningful biologic activity across multiple receptor systems beyond CB1 and CB2, including TRP channels, PPARs, and serotonergic pathways.
Preclinical data suggest these cannabinoids possess potent anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, analgesic, and anticonvulsant properties. Early clinical observations and case-based reports further support their potential utility in conditions such as chronic pain, inflammatory disorders, neurodegenerative disease, and mood dysregulation.
This session will provide an overview of the mechanisms of action of key minor cannabinoids, review the current state of translational and clinical evidence, and discuss real-world clinical experiences. As research advances, minor cannabinoids are poised to play an increasingly significant role in precision cannabinoid therapeutics.
